Why a yard drainage estimate starts with diagnosis
The same visible puddle can lead to very different scopes. Concentrated roof runoff may need solid underground downspout drainage. A lawn low point may need a catch basin and a gravity outlet. Saturated soil may justify a French drain, while broad surface flow may be handled by grading or a swale. A useful estimate first identifies the input, collection method, complete route and discharge point. Pricing a product before those questions are answered can produce a lower-looking quote for a system that does not address the actual source.
Elevation, outlet and excavation depth
Gravity drainage only works when the proposed route reaches a lower, serviceable outlet with continuous fall. The available elevation affects trench depth, excavation volume, fittings, discharge protection and whether a planned route is practical at all. Flat or reverse-grade properties may require a different route, limited regrading or another design approach. Because two nearby homes can have different slab, yard and curb elevations, a city name or linear-foot estimate cannot replace measurements taken at the property.
French drain installation cost factors
A French drain estimate should account for trench length and depth, geotextile fabric, clean aggregate, perforated collection pipe, connections, outlet conditions and restoration. Tight access, roots, utilities and saturated excavation can change the labor required. The quote should also explain why subsurface collection is appropriate. If most of the water comes from a roof or crosses the lawn surface, solid pipe, a surface inlet or grading may solve the condition more directly than adding a longer gravel trench.
Catch basin and surface drain cost factors
Catch basin installation cost depends on the number and size of collection points, the contributing surface area, solid-pipe route, required fall, cleanouts, outlet and protection against erosion. One properly placed inlet may outperform several grates installed away from the natural low line. Conversely, a single small inlet may not handle water arriving from a large roof, driveway or neighboring grade. The estimate should connect inlet placement and capacity to what happens during rain rather than treating every basin as an interchangeable part.
Channel and trench drain cost factors
A channel drain across a driveway, patio or garage threshold involves more than the grate itself. Concrete cutting or forming, channel length, load requirements, end connections, pipe route, outlet elevation and surface restoration all affect scope. The drain must cross the actual flow line and remain serviceable. If runoff can bypass the ends, overwhelm the outlet or approach from another direction, the proposal may also need grading or upstream source control.
Yard grading and drainage swale cost factors
Grading cost is influenced by the area being reshaped, the amount and type of soil, access for equipment, existing irrigation, trees, fences, hardscape transitions and the finish surface. A drainage swale also needs a stable destination and erosion control. Moving soil without checking door, slab, fence and neighboring elevations can transfer water instead of resolving it. A complete grading estimate therefore includes the intended flow path, surface stabilization and restoration—not simply imported topsoil.
Foundation-area drainage and roof runoff
Water near a foundation can come from short downspout extensions, low soil beside the slab, trapped beds, hardscape or runoff from another part of the lot. Estimate factors may include downspout connections, solid conveyance pipe, grading, surface collection and restoration around utilities or landscaping. The drainage scope should state which water source it controls and where that water will discharge.
Repair, cleaning and replacement decisions
An existing yard drain that once worked may have a blocked grate, buried outlet, root intrusion, separated fitting, crushed pipe or loss of fall. Inspection and targeted repair can cost less than replacing an entire system when the original route remains usable. If the pipe was undersized, installed without a workable outlet or mismatched to the water source, cleaning alone will not create a durable result. The estimate should distinguish maintenance from correction of the original design.
What to compare between drainage proposals
Compare whether each proposal identifies the water source, collection points, pipe type, route, fall, outlet, cleanouts, excavation limits and restoration. Ask what is excluded, how utilities and access are handled, and what condition would cause the design to change. A proposal with fewer line items is not automatically less expensive if sod, concrete edges, haul-off or outlet work appears later.
